WCS applauds Indian villagers for tiger rescue

WCS applauds Indian villagers for tiger rescueThe Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) has applauded people of Nidugumba village in Karnataka State for their swift actions to save an injured tiger.

The female adult tiger was found entangled in barbed wire on a coffee plantation December 4 in the village of Karnataka State in southwest India.

Showing a very positive conservation attitude, the villagers prevented the entangled animal from being harassed and called until forest rangers and veterinarians. Forest rangers and veterinarians rushed to the site and anesthetized the animal so that it could be freed from the barbed wire.

Ullas Karanth, WCS Director for Science - Asia, praised the villagers as well as forest officers for their model handling of a situation.

Praising the villagers and officers, Karanth said, "WCS India applauds the village of Nidugumba for their exemplary restraint and positive conservation attitude, and compliments the staff and officers of the Karnataka Forest Department for their model handling of a situation."

Karanth added the situation could easily have turned into a tragedy for the tiger as well as humans if the villagers had not shown exemplary restraint and positive conservation attitude.

The injured female adult tiger is now being care for at the Mysore Zoo.
