Whoopi Goldberg working on medical marijuana startup developing solution for menstrual pain

Actress and comedian Whoopi Goldberg has started a new medicinal marijuana startup called Whoopi & Maya with her cofounder Maya Elisabeth, who’s been running medical marijuana company Om Edibles since 2008. Whoopi will serve as chairperson, while Maya will be the CEO of new venture. They have shared that the company will launch four products infused with cannabis for women to get relief from menstrual pain.

Whoopi was inspired to start weed business by her own experience. For her, it was cannabis which provided relief during that time of the month. She also had publically revealed before about her love for pot. The four products will relive women from period cramps and discomfort. These are called sort of ‘menstrual survival kit’ that includes products in the form of edibles, tinctures or liquid extracts, rubs and a bath soak, all of them infused with cannabis.

Maya called the products discreet, saying that tincture can be dropped into any beverage, or placed under the tongue. In cacao, the cannabis flavor can’t be tasted. While these two products are psychoactive which means may induce marijuana high, the bath soak and rub are not. The bath soak will make one this relaxed that one would go to bed.

The retail prices for the product are not yet set; it is likely that products will be available at selected dispensaries in California from next month. To start the business, both cofounders have raised $650,000 in funding from friends and family. The medical marijuana industry was worth $5.4 billion in 2015 which make it is a profitable business to invest into.

Maya also added that the drug is not only for those with menstrual discomfort. It can be used by men and they are also seen showing interest in the products. “That’s one of the things that are so beautiful about cannabis. The side effects [of the products] are desirable,” said Maya.
