Girl was reportedly under pressure to excel in academics
Komal Ramchandra Davne (15), a Juinagar resident, committed suicide on Thursday at around 5.30 pm. A resident of Bharat Co-operative Housing Society in sector 25, Davne was an average student and is said to have taken the extreme step following some pressure, one of her neighbours said.
Davne consumed rat poison and committed suicide and was declared dead after being rushed to the hospital, an official from Nerul Police Station said. "She was the only daughter of her mother who is completely shattered after the incident," the neighbour said. "We have registered the case and investigations are on," Nerul police officials said.
Meanwhile, the principal of Amruta Vidyalaya, where Davne studied, was not available for comments. As per police records, the number of suicide cases have decreased by seven in the satellite city in the year 2008.
Similarly, incidents of robberies have decreased by 15 cases in Navi Mumbai while those of thefts have increased by 112 cases in 2008 as compared to 2007, police said. However, the cases of vehicle thefts have increased in the last year since Navi Mumbai and Raigad districts top the list as far as registration of vehicles is concerned. Other crimes such as murder and attempt to murder also increased by 16 and 18 cases respectively. There were 45 murders registered in 2007 among which 32 were solved while in 2008, 61 murder cases were registered.
