Thousands of police guard Athens for student uprising march

Greece FlagAthens - Thousands of police were deployed in central Athens Monday for a march commemorating the 35th anniversary of a student uprising against the military dictatorship that once ruled Greece.

More than 8,000 riot police and undercover officers will guard the streets in downtown Athens and another 2,000 in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki.

The streets in downtown Athens have been cordoned off and shops closed early ahead of the march which in past years has been marked with violence.

Britain's Miliband to hold talks with Lebanese leadership Tuesday

Beirut, LebanonBeirut - British Foreign Minister David Miliband is to visit Lebanon for talks with President Michel Suleiman, Prime Minister Fouad Seniora and Parliamentary Speaker Nabih Berri, the Lebanese National News Agency (NNA) reported Monday.

The talks with the British official is to take place on Tuesday.

Miliband arrived in the Middle East on Sunday for talks with Israeli and Palestinian leaders in a bid to enhance the peace process as Israel prepares for early elections.

Divisions deepen within a weakened ETA

Volkswagen reports lower sales in October

VW car logoWolfsburg, Germany - Volkswagen reported a drop in sales in October but predicted it would sell more cars in 2008 than it did last year.

Europe's largest automaker said it delivered 502,600 vehicles last month, a drop of 5.1 per cent from a year ago. Sales in the first 10 months of 2008 were up 2.8 per cent to
5.29 million.

VW said increased sales in emerging economies like China and Brazil helped offset a slump in demand in western Europe.

Citigroup to cut further 50,000 jobs amid global financial crisis

Citigroup sues Wachovia for 60 billion dollars New York - US banking giant Citigroup said Monday in New York that it was cutting some 50,000 jobs from its international workforce after suffering massive losses as a result of the global financial crisis.

The bank was planning to cut costs by 20 per cent, it said Monday.

Polish premier visits Gulf for gas contract talks

Poland Flag Warsaw - Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk was going to Kuwait and Qatar Monday for three days of talks on gas contracts and lessening Poland's reliance on Russian supplies.

Tusk would meet with Gulf leaders for talks on economic cooperation, energy, and the chemical and petrochemical industry, his chancellery said.
