London, Nov 17 : A new study has revealed that a hidden network of glacial lakes far below the Antarctic surface regulates the motion of the continent’s ice rivers.
The study was undertaken by Leigh Stearns of the University of Maine and her colleagues.
According to a report in New Scientist, when the subglacial lakes overflow, the ice above accelerates towards the ocean.
“It’s like putting in a squirt of oil,” said Andy Smith of the British Antarctic Survey. “The water lubricates the base of the glacier,” he added.

Kidman, 41, who divorced her first husband Tom Cruise in 2001, is very determined and “touches wood” every day for good luck.

The 39th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) will start from November 22 in Goa. During the film festival, 200 films in various sections from dozen countries will be screened.
The "competition" section will include two Indian entries - S. Priyadarshan's Tamil film "Kanchivaram" and Ramesh Laxman More's acclaimed Marathi film "Mahasatta" along with 13 other films chosen from Bangladesh, Russia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, Sri Lanka, Iran, the Philippines, Argentina, China and Japan.
Washington, Nov 17: Aussie actor Hugh Jackman likened his love scenes with Nicole Kidman in their new movie ‘Australia’ to poetry.
Jackman, 40, also revealed that filming love scenes with Kidman, 41, “couldn''t have been better or easier”, but added that they decided to put a limit.
“We spoke of setting boundaries,” People magazine quoted him as saying.
The Van Helsing star was asked if he was wearing anything for the steamy scenes and he coyly avoided the question.
Washington, Nov 17: Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has reportedly urged Washington to provide the predator technology to Pakistan instead to enhance its ability to fight terrorism.
Zardari made this demand while expressing his disapproval of the US’ drone attacks on Pakistani areas along the Afghan border, reported the Daily Times.
He also voiced hope that the incoming Barack Obama administration would recognise Pakistan’s key anti-terror role as well as understand the fact that his country has been a victim of terrorism as well.
