Lucky number three for GS winner Raich

Adelboden, Switzerland - Benjamin Raich completed a hat-trick of giant slalom victories in Adelboden on Saturday and with it claimed first place in the overall World Cup and discipline standings.

The Austrian Raich, 30, hung on to his first-run lead for a winning total of 2 minutes 24.95 from two runs.

Massimiliano Blardone of Italy came second in 2:25.19 minutes. Rising Norwegian 72 Kjetil Jansrud got his first career podium in third place with 2:25.67 minutes, up from 14th place in the first run.

"It is a very tough hill, that's good for me," said Raich.

Raich won in Adelboden for the third time, following success in 2006 and 2007. It was his third win of the season as well, his 33rd overall and the 400th for the Austrian men's team in the World Cup.

Raich moved atop the overall list with 533 points from 16 events. Jean-Baptiste Grange of France dropped to second with 478 points and the 2007 champion Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway has 470.

Raich also moved to the top of the giant slalom standings with 286 points from five races. American Ted Ligety has 241 and Switzerland's Didier Cuche 234 points.

"Things are looking good right now, but the season is long. It is most important that first place is there after the final race. That's my big aim," the 2006 World Cup champion Raich said.

The men's World Cup continues with a slalom in Adelboden on Sunday. (dpa)
