NATO troops allegedly involved in Pak-Afghan raid

Bomber killed in Kabul attack, dozens Taliban killed in clashes

EuropeKabul - A suicide bomber attacked a convoy of international troops in Kabul, killing only himself, while dozens of Taliban militants were killed in firefights with Afghan and international forces elsewhere, officials said Saturday.

A bomber detonated his explosive-laden vehicle near a convoy of international forces in Pajhman, on the western outskirts of Kabul on Saturday morning, killing himself but causing no casualties among the NATO soldiers, provincial police chief Mohammad Ayoub Salangi said.

Russia may restrict oil deliveries to Western Europe

London, Aug 29 : Fears are mounting across the West that Russia may restrict oil deliveries to Western Europe in the coming days, in response to the threat of EU sanctions and NATO naval actions in the Black Sea.

Any such move would be a dramatic escalation of the Georgia crisis and play havoc with the oil markets, The Telegraph reported.

Reports have begun to circulate in Moscow that Russian oil companies are under orders from the Kremlin to prepare for a supply cut to Germany and Poland through the Druzhba (Friendship) pipeline. It is believed that executives from lead-producer LUKoil have been put on weekend alert.

NATO ships in Black Sea not there for Georgia crisis, alliance says

EuropeBrussels - The deployment of four NATO warships in the Black Sea was planned more than a year ago and has nothing to do with the latest developments in nearby Georgia, the alliance said Thursday.

The statement from Brussels follows expressions of concern by Russian officials at what they call a "buildup" of NATO ships in the area.

"This deployment is routine in nature and has been planned for over a year, notification of the requirement to transit the Turkish Straits was given in June, well before the current Georgia crisis and is completely unrelated," NATO said.

NATO calls on Russia to reverse recognition of breakaway regions

Nato LogoBrussels - NATO's 26 member states on Wednesday called on Russia to reverse its recognition of the independence of two breakaway Georgian regions, warning Moscow that Georgia's security and stability were "important" to the alliance.

The North Atlantic Council, which brings together the ambassadors of NATO's 26 member states, "condemns the decision of the Russian Federation to extend recognition to the South Ossetia and Abkhazia regions of Georgia and calls upon Russia to reverse its decision," a statement from NATO's Brussels HQ said.
