German business leaders in Jordan for "green" trade talks

Amman - Jordanian and German business leaders met in Amman Tuesday to look into means for boosting bilateral cooperation and trade - particularly in the field of "green" technologies.

The German contingent accompanied Premier of the State of Saxony- Anhalt Wolfgang Bohmer, currently on a visit to Jordan.

Bohmer told the meeting his state was a global leader in the fields of agriculture, education, renewable energy, water desalination and fighting desertification.

Jordanian Minister of Trade and Industry Amer Hadidi said: "Germany is Jordan's key trade partner from among the European Union countries."

Jordan, Canada sign nuclear cooperation accord

Amman - Jordan and Canada on Tuesday signed an agreement for cooperation in the sphere of peaceful uses of the nuclear energy, president of the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC) Khalid Toukan said.

The accord concluded between the JAEC and the Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) is a follow-up for the memorandum of standing that was signed between the two sides in June, he added.

"Under the agreement, the AECL will extend all possible assistance to Jordan in the areas of building nuclear reactors for peaceful uses such as electricity generation and water desalination as well as nuclear security, planning of nuclear radiation and protection of environment," Toukan said.

Foreign ministers of Germany, Jordan discuss Mideast peace

Amman - German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Monday met his Jordanian counterpart Salah Bashir to discuss the latest developments in the Middle East and international efforts to enable a peaceful settlement in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

"Bashir underlined the importance of reviving serious and effective Palestinian-Israeli negotiations at the earliest possible time with a view to reaching a settlement on the basis of the two- state solution, the Arab peace initiative and the relevant UN resolutions," a foreign ministry statement said.

Donkey used in protest against Valentine's Day in Jordan

Amman  - A Jordanian dressed a donkey in red and placed it at the entrance of the city of Ramtha, 80 kilometres north of Amman, on Saturday to express his rejection of celebrations marking Valentine's Day, the daily al-Dustour reported Sunday.

"The move is intended to send a clear message to all that celebrating Valentine's Day is strange to our religion, traditions and culture," Ayman Quaider told the paper, which published a picture of the donkey wrapped with a red piece of cloth and with red roses fixed to its ears.
