Forty-six year old film star-turned-politician was accompanied by his friend and State Labour Minister Shibu Baby John and other friends from the film industry including ace director Shaji Kailas and producer Suresh Kumar at the chief minister's official residence.

'Krrish' project: Filmkraft, Toonz Animation and Turner join hands

KrrishMumbai/Thiruvananthapuram, April 1 : Filmmaker Rakesh Roshan's Filmkraft Productions has partnered with Turner International India and Kerala-headquartered Toonz Animation to create four animated movies based on the Bollywood movie "Krrish".

The movies will be created between 2013 and 2014, the first of which titled "Kid Krrish" will be aired on Turner International India-owned Cartoon Network July 14 this year, said an official release from Toonz Animation.

The official announcement of the project will be made in Mumbai Monday, it added.

Court notice to Kurien after fresh petition

P-J-KurienIdukki (Kerala), March 27 : Accepting a petition by the Suryanelli sex case victim, a district court Wednesday ordered that notice be served on Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairperson P. J. Kurien and four others, including the Kerala government.

The Idukki court also posted the case for May 29 and asked all those, who would be served notice, to be present in the court.

The victim approached the court after her petition was not admitted in a lower court in the district earlier this month. She has demanded further probe into the case.

Kerala bank deposits stand at Rs.220,489 crore

Kerala-bankThiruvananthapuram, March 26 : Banking activities in Kerala appear to be on the high with key indicators, including the credit-deposit ratio, registering a growth and total deposits standing at Rs. 220,489 crore, bankers said Tuesday.

The total deposits in the commercial banks reached the high of Rs. 220,489 crore till December 2012, up from Rs. 158,306 crore in December 2010.

These figures came out in the day-long 109th meeting of the State Level Bankers Committee here.

As of December 2012, the state had 5,140 branches of various banks while the number of such financial institutions in December 2010 were 4,488.

CM Chandy inaugurates biogas plant at SecretariatKerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Sunday inaugurated a biogas plant on the Government Secretariat premises.

Installed by Bio Flame-Biogas and Energy Private Limited, the plant uses modern technology and can process biodegradable as well as solid waste.

The plant is capable of processing up to one hundred kilograms of biowaste an hour and producing eight to ten kilograms equivalent of fuel.

Chandy said that there was a need to give importance to processing of waste at the source and installing biogas plants at organizations and houses. 

Set up special court to try marines in Kerala: Chandy

Oommen-ChandyThiruvananthapuram, March 23 : Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy Saturday wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh urging that the special court to try two Italian marines on murder charges be set up in the state itself.

"We wish to designate the sessions court at Kollam, where the marines case came up for trial. It should be noted that all records and evidences are before this court as the investigation agency had submitted it to them," said Chandy.

He also pointed out that if the special court is set in Delhi, all the witnesses in the case will have to frequently travel there.

Now study proves it - bidi smoking causes cancer

bidi-smokingThiruvananthapuram, March 21 : The country's first such study, using cohort groups, has proven conclusively that smoking bidi (tobacco wrapped in the leaf of the tendu plant) increases the propensity for cancer.

P. Jayalekshmi of the Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) here, who led the study on bidi-induced lung, oral, laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer, said lung cancer risk among former bidi smokers was higher than in those who never smoked bidis.

In Kerala this summer, earn cash for electricity saved

KSEB-2LogoThiruvananthapuram, March 13 : State-run Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB), reeling under monthly losses of over Rs. 200 crore, has come out with a unique scheme for domestic consumers which allows them to earn cash back for power saved.

While the state requires, on an average, around 58 million units daily, the generation from the state mainly through hydel generation and other sources comes to only half its requirement. The rest of the power consumed in the state is sourced from the central pool and from power purchased from external sources at high cost.

Speaking to IANS, veterinarian and elephant expert Jacob Cheeran said that this project has been in the pipeline for a while.

"The zoo will come up in a 330-acre area which was originally degraded forests and had cashew plantations. It will be completed in three stages in seven years," said Cheeran, a committee member of the first expert group that was set up to draw a roadmap for the zoo.

P-J-Kurien-01Kochi (Kerala), Feb 25 : The Kerala High Court on Monday adjourned the hearing of the bail pleas of 17 accused in the Suryanelli rape case allegedly involving Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman PJ Kurien till March 4.

Justices K T Shankaran and M L Joseph Francis said the appeal and records about the case had not been received from the Supreme Court and it cannot proceed without perusing them, even though the accused wanted their pleas to be taken up today.

We will fool-proof Air India reservations: Minister

K-C-VenugopalThiruvananthapuram, Jan 30 : Minister of State for Civil Aviation K. C. Venugopal Wednesday said reservations on national carrier Air India and its subsidiaries would be revamped, in the wake of instances of irregularities reported recently.

"Never before in the history of the carrier has such strict action been taken. Two officials were suspended after it came to light that there were seats on the aircraft, while the online booking system showed that there were no seats," said Venugopal to reporters here.
