Killing mosquitoes without raising a stink just became a reality

MosquitoWashington, August 30: Scientists at the University of California, Davis have developed an odourless chemical that can lure gravid female mosquitoes, and help play a key role in surveillance and control programs for Culex species that transmit diseases like West Nile virus, encephalitis and lymphatic filariasis.

Lead researcher Walter Leal, a chemical ecologist, has revealed that the synthetic mixture, containing compounds trimethylamine and nonanal in low doses, is just as enticing to Culex mosquitoes as the current attractants, but this one is odorless to humans.

Men and women respond differently to antidepressants

AntidepressantsWashington, Aug 30: Women with depression are more likely than men to benefit from antidepressant drug citalopram (Celexa), according to a new study, which suggests a biological basis for difference in response.

Researchers from the University of Michigan Depression Centre tested the drug's ability to help depression patients achieve total relief from their symptoms.

During the study 2,876 men and women who had a clear diagnosis of major depression, were given citalopram over a number of weeks, with the doses increasing over time.

Now, eco-friendly Teflon cookware in your kitchens!

Washington, August 29: In a groundbreaking study, scientists have identified a catalyst that efficiently breaks the C-F bond and converts it to a carbon-hydrogen bond, rendering it harmless to the environment, which might lead to eco-friendly Teflon cookware.

Though the strength of the C-F bond makes it useful in so many applications apart from Teflon cookware, it also gives a formidable greenhouse gas effects that persists in nature.

“The C-F bond is difficult to transform into other bonds under mild conditions because it is inert and unreactive; it’s a challenge to chemists,” said lead author chemist Oleg Ozerov, who conducted the research with postdoc Christos Douvris.
