Washington, Mar 25 : Japanese scientists have created what could be world''s first `green' hair bleach, an environmentally friendly preparation for lightening the colour of hair on the head and other parts of the body without the unwanted effects of the bleaches used by millions every year.

Kenzo Koike, a chemist with Kao Corporation''s Beauty Research Centre in Tokyo, has isolated an enzyme from a strain of Basidiomycete ceriporiopsis, a type of `white-rot' fungus that has also shown potential to degrade and clean up pollutants in soil.

Washington, Mar 25 : A new study has suggested that herbal medicines could benefit patients suffering from gastrointestinal (GI) motility disorders that cannot be treated using conventional drug therapy.

For the study, researchers reviewed data on Japanese herbal medicines and found them to be effective in reducing the symptoms of GI disorders such as functional dyspepsia, constipation, and postoperative ileus.

Washington, Mar 25 : A team of Australian researchers has found a way to predict plagues of disease-carrying mosquitoes up to two months ahead.

According to ecologist Associate Professor Corey Bradshaw from the University of Adelaide, this should help fight outbreaks of mosquito-borne disease like dengue and Ross River fever by allowing efficient and cost-effective mosquito control.

Washington, Mar 25 : American singer Lady Gaga has revealed that had she lived in the hippie era in the 1960s, she would have been chasing after John Lennon and fighting for him with Yoko Ono.

Lady Gaga, 23, real name Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, believes she was born in the wrong era, and insists that she would have fit in better when The Beatles were at the height of their fame.

"I'm quite sure that if it were 1968 I may not be the Lady GaGa that I am today," Contactmusic quoted her as saying.

Washington, March 25 : Researchers studying a hydrogen-producing, single-celled green alga, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, have unmasked a previously unknown fermentation pathway that may open up possibilities for increasing hydrogen production.

C. reinhartii, a common inhabitant of soils, naturally produces small quantities of hydrogen when deprived of oxygen. Like yeast and other microbes, under anaerobic conditions this alga generates its energy from fermentation.
