Lucky CIL upset fancied BEML

Although the blue jerseys were more dominant, they couldn't find a way to score

A messy BEML side fell to a freak goal against CIL in the BDFA Super Division league at the Bangalore Football Stadium on Tuesday. The lucky goalscorer was Enian, who sent in a hopeful shot from the edge of the box in the 48th minute; goalkeeper Rajan was well positioned behind the ball, but let it slip.

BEML were much the better side, both on paper and on the field of play, but they just couldn't string things together. They began promisingly enough, with strikers Samuel Jackson and Jotin Singh combining well with the midfield. They used the flanks well, spread out the game, and their midfielders constantly sent in probing balls from the deep.

As an 11-year-old, Geethu Anna Jose tagged alongside her sister as the two made their way to the athletics centre at Mt Carmel High School in Kottayam, Kerala every evening. Geethu watched her sister sweat it out on the track and field. Predictably, it wasn't long before she gave in to the temptation of wearing some athletic gear herself, trying to emulate her older sibling.

Though the teams were well matched on the paper, and in their skills, it was debutants JN Petit who had the last laugh as they huffed and puffed before prevailing 49-42 to enter into the semi-finals of the Championship.

Time to say

Time to sayHours after the attacks on Sri Lanka's cricketers in Lahore, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram suggested that the Indian Premier League, set to start on April 10, be put off. Chidambaram said he was concerned that the Central government would not be able to provide adequate security to the event, as personnel would be deployed for election duty.

Pak terror targets Lankan cricket team, clouds the future of sport

IPL may be put off, 2011 World Cup may avoid Pakistan

Till Tuesday, 'tis not cricket' had a connotation quite different from what it might be in the future.

The assassination of 11 Israelis by Palestinians in the Munich Olympic Village in 1972 remains the most dastardly act of violence in modern sports history. But yesterday's terrorist attack by a dozen armed gunmen on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore is no less diabolical even if there have been fewer casualties, and no player has died.
