Transporter's strike enters second day
It's the second day of transporter's strike across the country after the UPA government declined their demand to reduce fuel prices. A few number of trucks and commercial vehicles moved on the roads across various states. Meanwhile, LPG and Petroleum tankers truckers have also decided to extend support to strike.
Transporters are demanding immediate reduction in petroleum products in line with fall in their prices in international market. They also want permit relaxation and uniform tax across all states to stop economic exploitation of transporters. It is believed that government is ready to remove service tax from some of sectors like cargo and handling to end the strike.
The President of All India Motor Transport Congress, Charan Singh Lohra said, "We have gone on a strike from midnight. We will continue our strike until our demands are met by the government."
However, he said that the body would ensure supply of daily commodities to avoid inconvenience to general public.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Mini Lorry Owners and Suppliers Association also joined strike by suspending lorry services from midnight. Association's president, T Jesudas said, "Despite a steep decline in the oil prices in the international market from 147 dollars a barrel to 42 dollars, both the Central and State governments have not brought down the prices of diesel."
