Chennai/Ranchi, June 7 : Tamil Nadu Police, today arrested about 200 protestors from Tiruvottiyur, Ambathur and Guindy, as they tried to disrupt railway traffic in different parts of Chennai city over the fuel price hike.

Unidentified people also threw stones on two MTC buses at Ayanavaram.

Most shops in the city remained closed and some auto rickshaw drivers chose not to ply their vehicles.

Meanwhile, in Jharkhand, a left shutdown call has affected normal life.

Protestors shouted slogans while marching down the streets of Ranchi and some forced shops to close. Attendance in offices remained thin.

"The Government has increased the prices of petrol twice in the last three months. We are protesting against this. They have not been able to control the spiralling prices and are giving illogical explanations behind it instead of countering the problem," said Shivendu Sen, State Secretary, Communist party of India (Marxists Leninist).

The Union Government has raised the price of petrol by Rs 5 a litre and that of diesel by Rs 3 a litre. The price of cooking gas also has been increased by Rs 50 per cylinder.(ANI)
