Jharkhand bus mishap: Munda visits victims at hospital

Ranchi, Sep 19 : Jharkhand Chief Minister Arjun Munda on Monday visited
victims of a bus accident, which took place near Bundu, about 50 km from
Ranchi.

Talking to reporters here, Munda said: "Many people got injured in this
incident. I have come here to see the injured and to look after their
treatment facilities. It was a front collision. It was a big incident."

"Families of deceased will get Rs. two lakh as compensation and injured will get good treatment," he added.

"I was sleeping when this incident took place. Suddenly a loud sound
took place and I saw a lot of injured decrying. I tried to save some
victims and to take out bodies of the deceased," said Ram Davey Singh, a
passenger.

The Income Tax Appellate Tribunal ruled that the JMM MPs did not have to pay tax "on donations" received from the Congress for the 1993 confidence vote in parliament, according to the case documents made available Monday.

Jharkhand cabinet expanded, nine inducted

Ranchi, Jan 9 : Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren Saturday expanded his cabinet, inducting nine ministers and taking its total strength to 12 - the maximum allowed.

The nine new ministers - all of cabinet rank - were sworn in by Governor K. Sankaranarayanan at the Raj Bhavan.

Of the nine, three were from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) - Hemlal Murmu, Hussain Ansari and Mathura Prasad Mahto, three from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) - Baidyanath Ram, Barkuwar Gagrai and Nilkanth Singh Munda, two from All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) - Chandra Prakash Chaudhary and Umakant Razak. Sudha Chaudhary is from the Janata Dal-United (JD-U). She is the only woman in the cabinet.

Jharkhand concerned about Arcelor Mittal steel project

Ranchi, Jan 9 - Jharkhand Deputy Chief Minister Raghubar Das said the government was concerned about the delay in the Arcelor Mittal steel project and would help in setting up its plant in the state.

"We are concerned about the steel projects, including that of Arcelor Mittal. Government will find out ways to help Mittal steel to set up their plant in the state (in Khuti and Gumla districts)," Das told IANS.

"The present government is concerned about industrialisation and at the same we are also concerned about the villagers whose land would be acquired for mega projects."

Palamau Superintendent of Police (SP) Jatin Narwal was transferred and made SP of Special Task Force (STF) in Ranchi Friday night, state government officials said here. He was replaced by Ramgarh SP Anup T. Matthew.

On Dec 30, police arrested Rajendra Yadav from Telari village of Palamau district. He died under mysterious circumstances the following day.

Rai, who has been booked by the Jharkhand vigilance department in a graft case for allegedly amassing wealth of Rs 1.60 crore, was brought to the state assembly from the Birsa Munda central jail here for the swearing-in ceremony.

"These are just allegations and investigation is on. I have full faith in the judiciary," Rai told reporters after taking the oath.

"Corruption will not be tolerated in any way in the state. The vigilance system will further be strengthened so that it can function in a more effective way," Sankaranarayanan said in his address to the state assembly.

Soren, who became Jharkhand's seventh chief minister Dec 30, had been asked by Governor K. Shankaranarayan to prove his government's majority on the floor of the house by Jan 8.

According to police, Maoist rebels blew up a rail track in Palamau district, about 180 km from Ranchi Monday night. Around a metre of the track was damaged in the blast.
