24-year-old MBA student jumps off building, dies

A 24-year-old MBA student allegedly committed suicide by jumping off a building’s terrace in Santacruz on Sunday morning. The police did not recover any suicide note from his house.

According to police, Viven Bhandarkar was a second-year student at IIPM College in Bandra (West). Bhandarkar lived with his parents and elder sister in Ashith Apartment at Juhu Koliwada in Santacruz (West).

On Sunday around 9.15 am, Bhandarkar went to the terrace of his six-storey building and jumped. Hearing the loud thud, neighbours rushed to the spot and found him in a pool of blood.

While some of them informed his parents, other neighbours went to the police station.

Around 9.40 am, the police arrived and sent the body to Cooper Hospital for the post-mortem.

“We’ve conducted the panchnama of the spot and recorded statements of the deceased’s father and one of the neighbours who first saw the body,” said Police Sub-Inspector Firoj Pathan of the Santacruz police station.

“Viven’s father, Krishna Bhandarkar works in the Merchant Navy as a captain. When the incident occurred, he was at Mazgaon dock and was told of the death by one of the neighbours,” Pathan said.

Pathan said Viven had reportedly been keeping to himself and had stopped socialising since the last year, and that he’d been seeing a psychiatrist since two months. “He did not interact much even with his parents and confined himself to his room. He shouted at his parents if they tried to probe, or even if they opened his bedroom door without knocking,” said Pathan.

A police official said, on condition of anonymity, that the preliminary investigation has yielded no concrete motive behind the suicide, but that they suspect a love affair could be the reason.

“Most of the text messages on Bhandarkar’s cellphone don’t have a number – they are from a computer, which indicates he had a love affair,” said Madhukar Choudhary, senior police inspector of Santacruz police station.

Choudhary said this did not mean a love affair was definitely the motive, and added that the police were examining other angles as well.
