Ace Filmmaker Tapan Sinha Passes Away!

Ace Filmmaker Tapan Sinha Passes Away! Ace story teller Tapan Sinha, who won 19 National Awards under different categories, and was conferred the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for lifetime achievement last year, died at a hospital in Kolkata on Thursday after a prolonged illness.

According to hospital sources, “Sinha died early Thursday at the hospital. He was suffering from acute bronco-pneumonia and was on life support system.”

“His pulse rates were very low and he had stopped responding to medication since Wednesday night,” the sources added.

Mr. Sinha, who was admitted to the hospital in December 2008, had been in and out of hospital over the last few years.

The much awarded maker of critically acclaimed movies like ‘Uphaar’ and ‘Sagina Mahato’, Tapan entered the film industry as a technician.

Finally, he ended his journey with 41 films, 19 of which got National Awards and honors from international film festivals of Berlin, Venice, London, Moscow, San Francisco and Locarno. His first film Ankush was released in 1954

In spite of producing classics such as Kabuliwallah, Ek Doctor Ki Mauth, Nirjan Saikate, Haate Bazare and Admi aur Aurat, Sinha was perhaps a lesser discussed director compared to his challengers.

Sinha’s cinematic works were mostly practical depictions of the struggles of the common man.
