When Saudi authorities are preparing for flogging sentence to a 13-year-old girl charged with assaulting a teacher at her school, Amnesty International has come in the arena for supporting the girl. It should be recalled that the girl confessed her mistake at a court in the city of Jubail on Tuesday, inviting punishment from authorities.
The full charges and punishment awarded to the girl is yet to be confirmed. But she allegedly brought camera phone in the class despite being aware of its ban in the school premises.
Amnesty urged the Saudi Arabian authorities to rethink on its decision in which the girl would get 90 lashes in front of her classmates. Claudio Cordone, Amnesty International's interim Secretary General added, "King 'Abdullah Bin 'Abdul 'Aziz Al-Saud must intervene immediately to ensure that the flogging sentence is immediately rescinded."
Cordone also urged the King to amend Saudi Arabian law and criminal procedure which are very shameful in the modern civil society.
Saudi Arabia's laws mandate flogging for a number of offences. The offenders are awarded with dozens to tens of thousands of lashes, generally, in installments. So-far a man has been awarded with a highest number of 40,000 lashes in 2009 for his involvement in a murder case.
