Australian police help bust global child-porn syndicate

Sydney - Australian police said Thursday they expect to make more arrests after 22 men were charged over their part in a global child sex abuse network.

More than 500,000 images and 15,000 videos have been seized as part of a year-long investigation sparked by a tip-off from Brazilian authorities.

Among those arrested was a 74-year-old solicitor, a police officer and child care workers.

"Over 200 suspects have been identified across a number of countries, over 70 countries, and I think on any scale that's a good result," Deputy Police Commissioner Andrew Colvin said.

"The videos seized as part of this operation have to be among the worst we have seen," Colvin said. "Some depicted sexual abuse of children lasting more than two hours."

He said at least two Australian children have been "removed from harmful situations" as a result of the probe.

Colvin said those who shared child abuse videos through this network would be hunted down.

"If we are not knocking on your door this morning, then it could be tomorrow," he warned. (dpa)
