CBI to submit final report on Rizwanur Rehman today

Kolkata, Jan 8: Rizwanur RehmanThe Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will submit its final report on the mysterious death of Rizwanur Rehman to the Calcutta High Court today.

Justice Soumitra Pal on December 17 last year had granted the agency time till January 8 to submit its report.

Earlier, Justice Pal on October 16, 2007 had directed the CBI to complete the investigation and submit its report before the court within two months.

CBI has been investigating the case for the last four months. It was expected to charge two members of the Todi family of which his wife was a member for involvement in Rizwanur's suicide and two police officials for the destruction of the evidence.

The Calcutta High Court had directed a CBI probe in the case after widespread allegations of police's involvement with the influential Todi family.

According to the CBI sources, they have gathered the data from the computer, which was seized from his maternal aunt's home, who after his death had deleted the letter written by computer graphic designer teacher Rehman.

The letter was retrieved at the forensic laboratory in which Rehman had stated the condition of his mind and non-cooperation from the Todi family in allowing him to meet his wife, Priyanka.

Five senior city police officials, including the then Commissioner of Police, were sacked on October 17, 2007 in the wake of suspicion of their involvement in the case.

Rizwanur had married Priyanka under the Special Marriage Act on August 18.

Rizwanur's body was found on the railway tracks between Bidhannagar Road and Dum Dum Junction on September 21, almost a month after his marriage to Priyanka, daughter of a businessman Ashok Todi. (ANI)
