Chinese car maker to set up plant in West Bengal

Chinese car maker to set up plant in West BengalA leading car maker from China is likely to set up a car manufacturing plant in West Bengal. The state government hopes that the company would set up the plant at the site, vacated by the TATA Motors after stiff opposition from Trinamool congress led opposition parties.

A team of officials from Chinese company, First Automobile Works (FAW), would soon visit the different locations in the state for the the project. It would tie up with Ural India for Rs 1,500-crore automobile manufacturing unit in Bengal. 

FAW representatives met with the state chief minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Tuesday to discuss various issues. The chairman of Ural India, J K Saraf and vice-director of FAW, Ren Diansheng expressed hopes for the early completion of the project. 

The proposed car project would produce cars at at price tag of Rs 1.6 lakh which will compete with Tata’s small car NANO. The company can also select project sites at Kharagpur and Kalyani areas of the state instead of Singur to avoid any controversy. The company would visit more locations in the state for final location of the project site.
