Choreographer Cherkaoui wins major German arts prize

Sidi Larbi CherkaouiHamburg - Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, the choreographer, has won the 75,000-euro (95,000-dollar) Kairos Prize for his contributions to modern dance, the Alfred Toepfer Foundation said Tuesday.

His mother is a Flemish Catholic and his father a Muslim Moroccan, and his dances, like his ancestry, often mix two cultures. His latest work Sutra, partly inspired by China's Shaolin martial arts, is set to premiere in Berlin on Wednesday.

The private Hamburg foundation is set to hand over the prize, awarded annually to leaders in the arts, in February. (dpa)
