Could Bariatric Surgery be linked to Fractures?
After facing various failed exercise and diet routines, more and more people now find themselves turning to bariatric surgery, or weight loss surgery, to take the extra pounds off. But a report released in 2009 had managed to reveal that out of 1 in every 5 people who had undergone the surgery had suffered a broken bone within a few years.
So is there really a link between bariatric surgery and bones breaking? Or was it simply the huge amount of weight that was lost which was at play? The answer remains unclear still, but what is certain is that the incidents were reported.
The findings of the research came from an analysis of data collected through a study from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, which included 97 subjects, most of who were middle aged males and females.
All the subjects had undergone weight loss surgery, and within the next 7 years, 21 of the people had suffered 31 fractures.
The findings did manage to catch the attention of various experts, but further studies are still needed to clarify many questions that are surrounding the revelations. Until then, one thing which is definite is that the popularity of weight loss surgery is growing with each passing day.
