DRDO's Aerostat on display at the aero show

DRDO's Aerostat on display at the aero showMain attraction of the AeroIndia show was Aerostat. Aerostat offered by Indian defence sector is bigger and better than before. Aerostat has the ability to stand stationary in the air by tying it tightly to the ground with an electro-optic wire.

Throughout the show, Aerostat has been raised twice to a height of 40 metres, once before the defence minister’s visit and secondly before the media persons. It was stationed at the height of 40 m only for half an hour.

In the beginning of the show, Aerostat was kept at ground level because ATC has not given the permission to keep it flying, as it will hamper the movements of flights throughout the show stated by an officer from the aerial delivery research & development establishment of Defence Research and Development Organisation.

As compare to micro UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) which does surveillance work and cannot fly for a longer period, Aerostat can be used for surveillance, intelligence, broadcasting and communication purposes and can fly continuously for seven days.

An Aerostat can carry a payload up to 300 kg and it is loaded with a special camera which can cover area of up to 60 km both during day and night.
