Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (BTRA), has banned the site for a temporary period following an incident where a Bangladeshi national was taken into custody for uploading sardonic images of Prophet Mohammed along with the country's leaders.
This news comes soon after Pakistan banned the site for a similar incident. Here, Mahbub Alam Rodin posted satirical images from one of his seven fake Facebook accounts and immediately detained by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). The RAB claims of following Rodin's online activity and believed his online conduct to be 'offensive'. However as of now the objectionable contents have been removed from the site but the banning has led into a protest by the student community of Bangladesh.
Experts claim that instead of banning a single account, how authorities can ban the entire site. This occasion was supported thoroughly by Islamic political parties of the nation. Meanwhile, facts suggest that Bangladesh has a history of blocking websites over various issues. In the past year it had blocked YouTube for political reasons rather than religious.
