Flexible Screen Could Lead To Foldable Computers
As the technology is growing for better; a flexible television screen was recently demonstrated by the researchers, which could result in people folding up their PC and putting it in their pocket.
This design could be used in televisions, posters as well as computers.
Additionally, it could also find a way to develop a newspaper display technolgy, which will enable the readers to upload daily news to an easy-to-carry display contraption.
The researchers from Sony and the Max Planck Institute in Germany launched this concept demo and firmly said, “Rigid television screens, bulky laptops and still image posters are to be a thing of the past.”
They also said, “It is all organic, flexible and transparent with an extremely low energy requirement, while it has an almost unlimited viewing angle and high efficiency. There is no need for a backlight and response times are up to 10 times fast than LCDs (liquid crystal displays), meaning ultra-smooth motion without blurring.”
Further the multiple layers can be stacked for some types of 3D effects, which would be made possible due to its transparency.
In the past attempts made to create flexible screens were not successful due to problems related to size and resolution. Further more, when the screen was folded, the image was also affected.
The creation of posters with moving images as well cereal boxes with talking images are also quite possible. The films such as Minority Report had depicted posters with moving images.
The Journal of Physics was reported by the researchers, “The displays have excellent brightness and are transparent, bendable and flexible. There are practically no display size limitations and they could be produced relatively easily and cheaply compared to today's screens.”
The earlier version of this work was demonstrated by Sony in 2006, but due to technical, mechanical and design issues, the ,ass production of the previous model was stopped.
