Six EU leaders pledge to end arms smuggling into Gaza

Jerusalem, Jan. 19 : Six European leaders arrived in Jerusalem on Sunday and made a commitment to ending the arms smuggling into Gaza.

Earlier in the day, the militant group Hamas announced its own one-week cease-fire and issued an ultimatum to Israel to withdraw its troops from Gaza within that time.

The announcement was made by Hamas officials in Syria. Later, Hamas representatives in the Strip also issued a statement saying they would honor the cease-fire.

Despite the uncertainty over the tenuous cease-fire, the Jerusalem Post quoted Prime Minister Ehud Olmert as telling a gathering of European leaders that Israel is determined to withdraw its troops.

Pak-US relations no longer transactional: Haqqani

Washington, Jan 19 : Pakistan Ambassador to the US Husain Haqqani, has said that his country's relationship with Washington is no longer transactional, and added that they are now long-term and strategic in nature.

Addressing a gathering of intellectuals, think-tank members and academia at the Nixon Centre here, Haqqani said: "The new US Administration and the democratic Government in Pakistan have common stance on how the two countries should cooperate not only in the fight against terrorism but also in the fields of education, health, trade and infrastructure building."

According to studio estimates, the Clint Eastwood drama `Gran Torino' landed the second spot with 22.2 million dollars, reports E! Online.

`My Bloody Valentine 3-D' came third with 21.9 million dollars while `Notorious' stood fourth with 21.5 million dollars.

Paramount''s `Hotel for Dogs,' a heart-warmer about a pair of adolescents who turn an abandoned hotel into a shelter for stray dogs, rounded off the top after earning 17.7 million dollars.

The top-grossing weekend films are:
