New Delhi/Panaji, Jan 17: The Goa Legislative Assembly was prorogued on Thursday following Chief Minister Digamber Kamat’s recommendation.

On Wednesday the Digamber Kamat Government came into minority after two Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Ministers along with Save Goa Front Legislators withdrew their support to the government.

A group of ministers, including Health minister Vishwajeet Rane, Tourism Minister Mickey Pacheco, and Save Goa Front legislators Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco and Atanasio Monserratte are understood to have come together to test the government on the floor of the House.

The ministers and a few ruling legislators are reportedly unhappy over functioning of State Finance Minister Dayanand Narvekar.

The revolt apparently stemmed from growing opposition to Narvekar's policies. The State Government, which has cancelled special economic zones in the state, is facing heat over the proposed Rajiv Gandhi IT habitat.

Narvekar, who is also IT minister, is supporting the park, which is opposed by Monserratte.

Meanwhile, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar has written to Speaker Pratap Singh Rane that the action of his party’s MLA’s were a violation of the guidelines and agreement between his party and the Congress party.

While claiming that they do not have any information regarding Governor's prorogue order, the rebel legislators maintained that there is no question of backtracking.

Manohar parrikar, leader of opposition said: “22 MLAs present in the House against the government proves the test of the government on the floor of the House. The State Governor, which I have been saying, is an agent of the Congress Party and how can he take recommendations from a Cabinet which has lost its majority.”

Before leaving for Bangalore, BJP leader L. K. Advani said: “At present point of time all that I can say is situation of instability has developed. Lets see how things shape up."

The BJP, whose senior leader Rajiv Pratap Rudy has gone to Goa to assess the situation there, is unhappy with the assembly being prorogued.

"We demand convening of a special session for a trial of strength. If the Digambar Kamat government, which is in a minority, fails to prove its majority it should be dismissed," party spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said.

In a bid to salvage the situation, AICC General Secretary Hari Prasad along with Siddharth Patel has arrived in Goa.

In the 40-member State Assembly, the ruling coalition has 23 members – Congress (16), NCP (3), Save Goa Front (2) and Independents (2). United Goans Democratic party's unattached legislator Atanasio Monserratte gives issue-based support to the government. The opposition has 16 members with BJP (14) and MGP (2).

In July too, the coalition government was reduced to minority after one of its allies and an independent withdrew support. However, in August, the Kamat government secured majority after three legislators broke away from the opposition GDA and joined it. (ANI)
