India Fully Ready For Commonwealth Games: Government

India would spend around two billion U.S. dollars for successful completion of prestigious Commonwealth Games to be held at New Delhi in June 2010. Sindhushree Khular, the minister of youth assured the participating countries that increased budget would ensure best and green Commonwealth Games in India.

Speaking at the second day of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in the capital of Trinidad and Tobago, Mr. Khular said, "When we made the budget we thought there would be 10 functional areas. We now had to raise the number to 34."

India has earlier successfully hosted the Asian Games in 1982 but sports infrastructure needs to be significantly upgraded to meet the new sports standards for the CWG.

Indian government is hoping good revenue from the broadcasting rights sales and sponsorships. Suresh Kalmadi, head of the Commonwealth Games Organizing Committee said that games would be planned according to the time zone of the key audiences for fetching more revenue through advertisements.

Kalmadi hoped that Commonwealth games would be a very successfully event and serve as a platform to strengthen India’s claim for the forthcoming Olympic Games or soccer World Cup.
