India to raise US visa fee hike, outsourcing ban at trade dialogue
India will protest against the sudden increase in US professional visa fees and the Ohio ban on outsourcing of government contracts at the Trade Policy Forum (TPF) meeting on Tuesday.
A speedy conclusion of an agreement to free from workers on short-term assignments from making social security donations will also be high on the country’s plan for the meeting, which is the highest platform for relations on trade policy.
Commerce and industry minister Anand Sharma and US trade Representative Ron Kirk in Washington will manage the meeting of it. A commerce department official told that we would ask them (the US) to make certain that the recent protectionist moves are repealed or watered down so that it does not affect Indian companies.
Previous month Mr. Sharma had written to Mr. Kirk against the fee hike which he called “highly discriminatory’’. He said that annually it would have a cost suggestion of around $200 million on Indian companies.
Even though the USTR did not reply to the letter, he recently told the US media that he was sensitive that the issue of visa fee hike had not been well-received in India.
