Indian Premier Singh to be discharged from hospital on the weekend

Manmohan SinghNew Delhi - Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is recovering after a heart bypass surgery, is likely to be discharged from hospital this weekend, a news agency reported Friday.

"He would be discharged on Saturday afternoon if everything goes right till that time or we might consider to extend his stay to Sunday," his doctor Vijay D'Silva was quoted by the Press Trust of India as saying.

Seventy-six-year-old Singh was operated on at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, the country's top state-run hospital, in Delhi on January 24.

D'Silva said Singh had slowly started getting back to his routine activities and was walking and exercising. Singh was moved out of the Intensive Care Unit at the hospital on January 28 and all his monitoring devices were removed.

Doctors told reporters earlier that Singh would be able to resume some official duties within two to four weeks after the operation, but would need up to six weeks to be fully active.

Singh underwent bypass surgery in 1990 and an angioplasty in 2004.

Local media raised questions about whether Singh's health might hamper the ruling Congress party's preparations for the country's general elections that must be held by May.

However, the party has clarified that the septuagenarian leader will participate in the party's campaign in the upcoming elections. (dpa)
