Jayawardene tops ICC test batsmen rankings

Mahela JayawardeneA brilliant double hundred in the first test match against India in Ahmedabad led former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene to no 1 spot in the latest Reliance International Cricket Council (ICC) rankings for batsmen released on Sunday.

Jayawardene is heading the batsmen list with 883 ranking points and he needs just 17 points to become only 25th batsmen to attain 900 points landmark. Jayawardene scored 275 runs in first test match against India and became 9th batsmen to score more than 9,000 runs in test matches.

Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar jumped one place to share the 15th spot with English batsman Kevin Petersen while Gautam Gambhir slipped one place to be at the third spot. Sachin had smashed his 43rd hundred in the Ahmedabad test match.

Rahul Dravid leaped five places to obtain 21st spot while Indian skipper captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni moved to the 30th spot with a gain of three places.

South Africa's Dale Steyn has retained no 1 place in the ICC test ranking for bowlers followed by Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralidharan. Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh is the only Indian bowler in the top 10 test bowlers, placed at the sixth spot.

South Africa team is leading the ICC test team rankings while Indian team is placed at the third spot. Sri Lankan team has retained their second place.
