Klitschko seeks new opponent after Haye bout in doubt, says report

Klitschko seeks new opponent after Haye bout in doubt, says report Hamburg - Ukraine heavyweight Wladimir Klitschko is looking for a new opponent after doubts have emerged over a planned fight in June with Britain's David Haye, Germany's Bild newspaper reported Wednesday.

Bild quoted Klitschko's manager Bernd Boente as saying the two sides had been close to a fight deal "but then there were increasingly more demands" from Haye's management.

Klitschko, the WBO and IBF heavyweight champion, is now sounding out possible bouts with joint WBA champion Nicolay Valuev of Russia or the IBF number two Chris Arreola, the report said.

Valuev, however, is being lined up to fight co-WBA champion Ruslan Chagaev of Uzbekistan in a bout now put back to September, while Arreola is up against fellow-American Jameel McCline on April 11.

A Klitschko-Haye fight had been been pencilled in for June 20 at Chelsea's football stadium, Stamford Bridge, but recent reports had spoken of a hitch in negotiations.

Klitschko, 32, who is based in Germany, last fought on December 13 when the referee stopped a one-sided bout in the seventh round against Hasim Rahman of the United States.

Haye had originally lined up a fight against Wladimir's elder brother Vitali for the WBC belt.

Vitali Klitschko, 37, who came out of retirement to reclaim his WBC title last year, has a mandatory fight against the German-based Cuban Juan Carlos Gomez on Saturday in Stuttgart, Germany. (dpa)
