Kolhapur foundry's efforts paid off with an award

Menon and Menon Ltd gets the Laxmanrao Kirloskar Best Foundry of the Year Award

Menon and Menon Ltd, a city-based company, has won the Laxmanrao Kirloskar Best Foundry of the Year Award from the Institute of Indian Foundrymen for 2008.

Company general manager (foundry) Ramesh Sabnis received the award at a function in Kolkata on February 13.

The company had won the award in 1998 also. Various criteria were considered for the award including the best practices and excellence in production, productivity, energy saving, quality systems, HRD promotion, export promotion and innovative techniques used on the shop floor.

Company managing director Vijay Menon told DNA that the company's capacity had increased to an average of 1,316 metric tonne per month in 2008-09 as against 392 metric tonne per month in 2002-03.

"The 3.5 times capacity addition in the last five years is due to the capacity enhancement programmes," Menon said.

The company's per man per month productivity has also touched to 3 metric tonne per month in 2008-09 as against 2.14 metric tonne in 2005-06.

The company has implemented Maynard Operational Sequence Techniques or 'MOST', which has helped in reducing manpower by increase in production. With the implementation of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), the company has reduced breakdowns, rejections and costs. The 'energy management cell's energy saving projects have saved around 10% in the energy cost during 2007-08.
