Madhya Pradesh ‘NO’ to Genetically Modified crops

Genetically-Modified-CropsThe Agriculture Minister of the state of Madhya Pradesh has said that the Genetically Modified crops have no place in the state. His comments came barely three days before the likely announcement by the centre on the fate of Bt Brinjal.

The minister expressed that he wants his state to emerge as India first "organic farming state" and also said, "I have already written a letter to the Centre against the commercialization of Bt Brinjal in country, as it wasn't good for human health and environment."

He further explained that there is need to increase the area used for organic forming and for the purpose the state government had prepared a detailed organic farming policy which is to be announced in days. Presently 425,000 hectares are being used for organic farming in the state.

He also pointed out that chemical fertilisers and pesticides had affected the farming land in the country in the last 30-40 years.

Organic Farming Association of India is also apposing unchecked use of chemical fertilizer as it said that the productivity in fertile states such as Punjab, Harayana and Western UP has decreased due to its excess use.

Another organization Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh raised voice against Bt Brinjal and compared it to the terrorists. RSS said that the public discussion has only begun recently and the vegetable should not be allowed in the country.
