Kolkata, Sept 8 : Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee agreed to end her two-week-long protest outside the TATA Motors’ Nano car plant at Singur after reaching an agreement with the West Bengal Government over land acquisition issue.

Mamata announced last night that the dharna would be called off following the agreement with the State Government after marathon talks at Raj Bhavan between her and Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee in the presence of Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi.

Mamata said: "This is a moral victory for farmers. We would like work at the factory to start from Monday as we are for industry and the ancillary units too."

A statement issued by the Governor said that the Government would respond to the demands of those farmers who have not received compensation, land would be provided to the maximum within the project area and the rest in adjacent areas as early as possible.

A four-member committee will be constituted under the chairmanship of Trinamool MLA from Singur Rabindranath Bhattacharya to examine the issue and submit its report in a week. The Government, in turn, will request vendors to stop work during the week.

Meanwhile, traffic was resumed on both lanes of Durgapur Expressway this morning. (ANI)
