Mitsubishi launches FUSO all-electric eCanter truck in Hong Kong

Mitsubishi Fuso Bus & Truck Corporation, a Japanese manufacturer of commercial vehicles headquartered in Kawasaki, has made a significant stride in the realm of electric mobility with the launch of its all-electric FUSO eCanter truck in Hong Kong. The launch of the FUSO eCanter in Hong Kong marks the first introduction of the commercial battery-powered vehicle in an Asian market outside of Japan, signifying a pivotal moment for the EV landscape in the region.

After making its presence felt in the US market in 2020, Mitsubishi Fuso has maintained a strong presence in Europe, Indonesia, New Zealand, and Taiwan. The new battery-powered commercial EV is available in three versions (S, M, and L) with different battery sizes, offering a diverse range of seven variants covering gross vehicle weight (GVW) ratings from 5 tons to 8.55 tons. Powered by a compact 110/129 kW (approx. 172 peak hp) e-axle, the FUSO eCanter achieves an electronically-controlled top speed of 55 miles per hour (mph).

The top speed of the vehicle may not be very impressive but the eCanter boasts a number of impressive capabilities, including the ability to tackle 20 per cent grades while fully loaded.

Safety takes top priority in the new eCanter models, featuring Active Sideguard Assist 1.0 and Active Attention Assist, which provide enhanced driver and pedestrian safety. Given Hong Kong's status as one of the most thickly populated urban areas in the world, these safety features are expected to play a crucial role in ensuring safety. The list of fleet-friendly software offerings includes driver safety ratings, geofencing, and energy management software, which contribute to the overall appeal of the FUSO eCanter in the commercial sector.

An added advantage for upfitters is the inclusion of a motorized electric power take-off (ePTO), which has been provided to facilitate power extraction similar to that available in the brand’s existing diesel trucks. Positioned under the eCanter's cab, the ePTO can drive hydraulic pumps and refrigeration compressors without any modification, simplifying the integration of the new EV into existing fleets.

As the electrification of commercial truck fleets continues to play a crucial role in global decarbonization efforts, the FUSO eCanter stands out as a promising contender for navigating crowded city streets and delivering on the evolving needs of urban logistics. Although the eCanter's arrival in North America is uncertain, its lasting impact on urban mobility and sustainability cannot be denied.
