Tokyo debut for Subaru's all-wheel-drive tourer concept
Tokyo - Japanese carmaker Subaru is to unveil a concept version of its new hybrid tourer at the upcoming Tokyo car show.
The most striking feature of the 4.6-metre-long car are the twin up and over gull-winged doors used by all four occupants to enter.
Under the skin a two-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine is mated to twin electric motors, a 10-kilowatt unit at the front and a 20-kilowatt version at the back axle. The 2009 edition of the Tokyo car show runs from October 24 to November 4.
An intelligent power management concept and regenerative braking to charge up the on-board lithium ion batteries should enable the driver to switch to electric propulsion at will.
Subaru calls the car an all-wheel-drive vehicle which differs fundamentally from a conventional 4-by-4 offroader in that there is no differential connecting the front and rear axles.
The futuristic interior incorporates a prototype collision avoidance system known as EyeSight which monitors the car's field of action with two cameras. (dpa)
