EU presidency condemns Iran suicide attack

EU presidency condemns Iran suicide attackBrussels/Stockholm - The European Union's presidency on Monday condemned a weekend terrorist attack which killed at least 42 people in Iran.

"The presidency of the European Union condemns today's suicide attack in the Province of Sistan and Baluchistan in Iran and the sad loss of life which it caused," the Swedish government, which currently holds the rotating EU presidency, said in a statement.

"The presidency conveys its condolences to the families of the victims of this attack," the statement said.

The EU is at odds with Iran over its controversial nuclear programme, which European states fear is intended for military purposes.

However, the bloc is also committed to fighting terrorism around the world, and especially in the Middle East and Afghanistan, two areas where Iran is seen as being able to play a key role. (dpa)
