Medicine in IITs: Health ministry to brainstorm today

Medicine in IITs: Health ministry to brainstorm todayThe Health Ministry has called a meeting of directors of medical institutes, chairmen of medical councils and top minister honchos to discuss on the proposal of IIT's producing doctors by including medicine education in the curriculum.

The three foremost concerns that would be discussed are whether IITs be permitted to start MBBS course, creation of the National Council for Human Resource in Health (NCHRH) which would substitute the existing Medical, Dental, Nursing and Pharma Councils of India and methods of reduction of scarcity of medical recruits in India.

Evidently, the opinion is divided with IIT Kharagpur and Hyderabad working on starting medical schools in about three years.

On the question of dilution of the standard of courses offered at IIT, MCI chairman DrKetan Desai stated that if IIT starts a medical school, it will have the equal standard as their other courses and they will also ensure they have the best faculty as their reputation will be at stake.

After this meeting, the Ministers having formed their own opinion about the proposal will send it to the HRD Ministry for consideration and approval.
