The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) is backing calls for introducing a 20mph speed limit in some areas such as zones outside schools.

According to a new survey by IAM, about 67% of people agreed with introducing the 20mph zones outside schools, while 38% said that the zones must be used for on roads with amenities such as shops and parks.

In the survey, only 20 per cent said they would support plans to make 20mph a default speed limit in all built-up areas. Even as a majority agreed with the need to introduce the limits but there are oppositions to the ways of enforcements such as speed humps and cameras. The respondents said signs and driver compliance should enforce limits.

The IAM's head of road safety, Kevin Delaney, said: 'The IAM supports the selective use of 20mph speed limits where there is clear evidence that the risk of casualties will be reduced. However, the blanket use of them risks widespread disregard by drivers.”
