Doctor Facing Charges for Illegally Prescribing Painkillers to Addicts

Dr. Michael Fagin has been facing charges for illegally prescribing pain medications to drug addicts. Police said he has illegally prescribed the pain medications to females sometimes in return of sexual favors.

On Friday, Fagin surrendered himself. Later the same day, he had to be arraigned on an indictment. As per a 12-count indictment, Fagin has prescribed painkillers to people between May 2010 and September 2014. He was aware of the fact that people to whom he prescribed medicines were addicts.

Court documents have unveiled that several times, Fagin accepted sexual favors in return of prescription. Fagin has pleaded guilty to the charges. He has prescribed pills, including Oxycodone and Methadone.

"At the trial the government anticipates calling as witnesses several women who confirmed that Fagin accepted sexual favors in exchange for controlled substance prescriptions", said Assistant US Attorney Lara Gatz.

In the early 1980s, Fagin's medical license was suspended for abusing pain medication himself. Owing to his addiction to Vicodin, he surrendered his license in 1993. In 2012, state authorities carried out investigation on him for prescribing methadone to his girlfriend.

As per prosecutor, Fagin's current wife has received prescription from him for more than 20,000 oxycodone, morphine, and methadone pills. After going through his case, acting Brooklyn US Attorney Kelly Currie affirmed that Fagin was not using his prescription-writing right to help people make their lives better, but to victimize vulnerable people.

The government has asked that Fagin should surrender his prescription-writing privilege and his medical license. He has been released on $25,000 bail and has also surrendered his license to prescribe painkillers.

Defense lawyer Anthony Colloluri said Fagin has not been charged for trading pill for sex. It could have been a serious allegation on him to tarnish his reputation.
