Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Sharif asks generals to distance themselves from Pervez Musharraf

Islamabad, Nov 2 : The Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) has urged corps commanders to distance themselves from President Pervez Musharraf and save the country from bloodshed.

“We demand the corps commanders to distance themselves from Musharraf,” the Dawn quoted acting PML-N President Makhdoom Javed Hashmi, as saying.

Hashmi advised politicians not to seek any favour from army generals as it was their last chance to save the federation.

He also alleged that Musharraf had abrogated the Constitution and therefore his legitimacy as President was being challenged.

Hashmi said that the PML-N did not recognise Musharraf as a legitimate or defacto President.

He rejected the possibility of imposition of martial law or an emergency, and said that the judiciary, lawyers, civil society organisations and media had become active and alive to their responsibilities.

Musharraf was a controversial person and every decision taken by him would remain controversial, he said.

Hashmi said that Musharraf had no right to impose a caretaker government.

The PML-N leader further said that his party had not yet decided to boycott the next election if held under the present military regime.

The country could not afford another controversial election as it could cause massive bloodshed in the country, he said.

Hashmi also rejected the proposed code of conduct announced by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for the next general election, saying the code had been drafted to “curb political activities”.

He said the ECP was no more an independent institution.

The code of conduct has been framed in an ‘autocratic style’ without consulting political parties, he said, adding that political parties had no faith in it. (ANI)
