Palin calls the shots in Alaska from campaign trail

Palin calls the shots in Alaska from campaign trailAs it is customary for candidates to return to their home state to vote on Election Day, the Alaska Governor is also expected to do the same. The campaign, however, has not announced this officially yet, due to the amount of time it takes to fly to Alaska and the need for the GOP Vice-Presidential nominee to continue campaigning.

In case Palin travels to her Anchorage office the evening of November 3rd, she will travel back to the continental US after she votes, to join her running mate in Phoenix for their Election Night party.

Palin, in fact, calls the shots in Alaska government from her campaign trail. She is accompanied by a trusted staffer - her Anchorage office director and hometown friend - Kris Perry, traveling at the expense of state residents - probably at a cost of more than $1,000 every day.

According to Linda Perez, state director of administrative services, Perry has been with Palin for almost a month to help facilitate communication between the governor and her staff back home.

A lengthy absence, like that of Palin’s, by the acting head of state, is unprecedented in Alaska. One author of the state constitution believes Palin should have officially assigned her duties over to the lieutenant governor before leaving to campaign for the vice presidential ticket.

Constitutional convention delegate and former Lt. Gov. Jack Coghill opines: “When Palin took on the candidacy for vice president, she should have then created a letter saying, ‘I am temporarily away from the Office of Governor and I hereby notify the lieutenant governor that he is constitutionally in charge.’ That’s the way it should be.”
