Melbourne [Australia], Jan.21 : Ace Indian tennis star Sania Mirza and her Croatian partner Ivan Dodig kicked off their Australian Open campaign with straight sets victory in their mixed doubles opening clash here at the Melbourne Park on Saturday.

The Indo-Croatian pair produced a resilient performance throughout the match to record a comfortable 7-5, 6-4 triumph over German-Croatian team of Laura Siegemund and Mate Pavic in the opening-round clash that lasted one hour and 25 minutes.

Mirza and Dodig will now lock horns with the winners of another mixed doubles clash between Chinese-Austria team of Saisai Zheng and Alexander Peya and the Australian duo of Sally Peers and John Peers.

Sania, who along with her Zimbabwean partner Cara Black defeated Hsieh Su-wei of Chinese Taipei and Peng Shuai of China 6-1, 6-0 to win the WTA Finals title on Sunday, also said that 2014 had been an incredible year for her.

"Like any other girl or woman; I also love fashion a lot. I think it's very important part of our lives. I don't necessarily follows what's in today but I do wear whatever is comfortable," the 27-year old sports star said.

Pande's collection titled 'Lady in Lace' had lace as one of the main components. The outfits ranged from long dresses to kaftans and Kurtas.

Last week, Prime Minister Modi had congratulated the tennis ace for winning the Grand Slam title. "Congratulations to Sania Mirza for the victory in the US Open Mixed Doubles Finals. We are very proud of the achievement," the Prime Minister had said.

Mirza and her Brazilian teammate Bruno Soares had lifted the US Open title on September 5. The duo defeated the American-Mexican side of Abigail Spears and Santiago Gonzalez, 6-1, 2-6, 11-9.(ANI)

Sania, who turned a professional tennis player in 2003 and overcame a career-threatening wrist injury in between, has achieved her career-best rank of number five in the world.

Sania and her partner Cara Black from Zimbabwe could not go deep in the recently concluded Wimbledon championships, but a second round appearance provided the Indian tennis ace with her crucial 130 ranking points that were enough to push her in the top five.

Sania MirzaIslamabad, Jan. 27  : Indian tennis star Sania Mirza has reportedly said that she would try for more Grand Slam mixed doubles titles with Romanian Horia Tecau after the pair stumbled in the Australian Open final in the weekend.

Mirza said that she had made a great start to the year despite the loss to Canadian-French pair Daniel Nestor and Kristina Mladenovic, who won 6-3, 6-2.

According to The Nation, Mirza reached the women's doubles quarterfinals with partner Cara Black, where they went out in three sets to eventual champions Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci of Italy.

They will face Italian-Australian unseeded pair Francesca Schiavone and Samantha Stosur late Wednesday.

Sania-BethanieMiami (Florida), March 27 : Top seeds Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci defeated Sania Mirza and Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-1, 6-4 to enter the women's doubles semifinals at the Sony Open tennis event here.

The Italian pair shut the door on the Indo-American combine in more than an hour, winning the final four games of the contest played Tuesday.

Having a 21-3 record in 2013, Errani and Vinci are two victories away from their 17th WTA title as a duo and 20th as individuals. They are also both still alive in singles and will play quarterfinal matches Wednesday, reported the WTA website.

Sania-Bethani in quarters; Bopanna-Ram out

Sania and Bethanie will face Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci for a semi-final berth.

In the men's doubles, Bopanna and his American partner Rajeev Ram were defeated 4-6, 5-7 (5) by the Spanish pair Mark Granollers and Marc Lopez.
