Minnesota's Twin Cities spruce themselves up for conventionWashington/St Paul, Minnesota - St Paul, Minnesota, is the official site of the Republican Party's National Convention from Monday to Thursday, but the event is really a Twin Cities endeavour.

St Paul, the state capital, is separated by the Mississippi River from Minneapolis, the state's most populous city. But the Twin Cities form an inseparable urban region.

In the northern-central state of Minnesota, which borders Canada, the Twin Cities have mild summers and long winters.

Centre gives clearance to Companies Bill 2008

Rajya SabhaNew Delhi, Aug 29 : The Union Cabinet on Friday approved the introduction of a new Companies Bill in Parliament to incorporate far-reaching changes, including scrapping the minimum paid-up capital requirement and setting up special courts to try offences.

The new bill, which is to replace the existing Companies Act, 1956, would be introduced in the coming session of the Parliament in October.

The Companies Bill 2008 mandates 33 per cent independent directors on the board of a company, which will have to follow SEBI norms if it gets listed.

Government approves amendments to AERA Bill

AERA BillNew Delhi, Aug 29 : The Government today approved amendments to the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (AERA) Bill, 2007.

The AERA Bill seeks to establish an independent regulatory authority comprising a chairperson and two members to be appointed by the Central Government.

The Bill also lays down the powers and functions of the regulatory authority, which will include determining the tariff structure for aeronautical services, amount of development fees in respect of major airports and amount of passenger service fee, and to monitor the performance standards relating to quality, continuity and reliability of service.

Nawaz Sharif says no compromise on restoration of judges

PML-N leader Nawaz SharifIslamabad, Aug 29: PML-N leader and former Pakistan premier Nawaz Sharif has said that there could be no compromise over the reinstatement of all judges, including deposed chief justice Iftikhar Chaudhry. He said that the reinstatement of all judges was agreed upon between the PPP and PML-N and that it was a “solemn pledge” to each other.

In an interview with an Indian English fortnightly news tabloid, he said that even slain PPP leader Benazir Bhutto had also agreed to restoration of Iftikhar Chaudhry as the country’s chief justice.

John McCain to announce running mate today

"I'm not voting for McCain. I have a different political standpoint. I think (Obama's) proposals to improve the country are more positive and I'm not a big war believer," the New York Daily News quoted Kathleen Portalski, 65, as telling the website Usmagazine. com.

Portalski's son Nathan said he, too, is backing Obama. And with him it's not just politics - it's personal.
