Qualcomm To Launch Small Laptop ‘Kayak’ In India For Rs 10K

Qualcomm To Launch Small Laptop ‘Kayak’ In India For Rs 10KSan Diego-based wireless communications company Qualcomm announced that it will shortly launch its small laptop, named Kayak, in the Indian market at an unbelievable price of Rs 10,000.

The laptop, primarily used for accessing Internet services, will hit the market during the second half of next year (2009).

Qualcomm Senior Vice-President and India head Kanwalinder Singh said, “We will introduce Kayak Internet access platform in second half of next year and this device leverages 3G chipsets as well. The main USP is it can compute in low power scenario like India. It will cost about Rs 10,000.”

In Kayak prototype, Qualcomm has designed a device, which can easily access the Internet over mobile phone data networks to regions that may not have wired Internet service from cable and telephone providers.

Qualcomm, pioneer of CDMA technology, has already rolled out Kayak PC alternative throughout the world.

Kayak is a reference design for building low-priced wireless-computing devices designed to fill up the gap that exists between desktop PCs requiring landlines or separate attachments for connectivity and Internet-capable wireless devices.

Kayak uses Qualcomm’s dual-core mobile station modem chipsets to offer both computing and connectivity, he said.

“We see developing markets like India seeking connectivity as inevitable and believe that concepts such as Kayak that leverage 3G wireless will be a key to success in helping these areas join the global online community,” Mr. Singh added.
