RCOM slashes 3G tariff by 50%
In an attempt to take on the competition, Reliance Communications (RCOM) has announced a 50 per cent reduction in its monthly tariff for 3G services for subscribers in the country.
The telecom service provider led by Anil Ambani will now offer high speed internet service to the customers in the country at about half the price of its competitors including BhartiAirtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular. The move comes after some telecom operators reduced tariffs for data usage beyond standard package limits in 2G and 3G services.
Experts have said that the data usage in the country has remained low but is set to rise significantly as the Indian consumers increasing purchase smartphone and tablets. RCOM has said that the monthly tariff for 1GB data on 3G will now cost Rs 123 compared to Rs 250 earlier, which is lower than company's 2G monthly tariff that of Rs 125 and matches rival's 2G offerings.
RCOM president and CEO (wireless) Gurdeep Singh said that the company is aiming to help customers escape slow data services and high costs and increase data consumption in the country. I is believed that several companies might now adopt a similar approach to the 3G services as take-up has been low in the country.
