Indian origin youths commence "Know India Trail" journeyMumbai, Sept. 8 : Thirty-three foreign youths of Indian origin today embarked on a three week journey to see and understand the development and achievements of India and also come close to the land of their ancestors.

These diaspora youth in the age group of 18-26 years are drawn from ten countries and constitute students and professionals. They have come to India under the Know India Programme (KIP) of the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs.

A maximum of 12 participants have come from South Africa, followed by 6 from Israel.

‘Hindraf movement not able to minimise the role of MIC’

Kuala Lumpur, Sep 8 : The Hindraf movement has not been able to minimise the role of Malaysian Indian Congress as the big brother for the Indian community in getting identity cards or birth certificates, business and taxi licenses, or to solve financial or family problems.

MIC Youth chief T. Mohan said while some Indians might approach Hindraf over temple issues or to protest about some issues, there was no drop in the number of people calling at the MIC for help.

He was asked to comment on a recent report by an online portal that Hindraf had been inundated with appeals for assistance from the Indian community.

Chinese Foreign Minister expects more investments in India

China Flag & MapKolkata, Sept 8 : Visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jeichi on Monday expressed a keenness for more Chinese investments in India.

Jeichi, who arrived here on Sunday on an official two-day visit to India, met West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee this morning and held discussions on various issues.

Addressing the media after his interaction with Bhattacharjee, Jeichi said his country would be interested in making investments in various fields including infrastructure building and other areas.

Sonia inaugurates Rajasthan’s first lignite mine

Sonia GandhiBikaner, Sept 8 : Congress president Sonia Gandhi today inaugurated Rajasthan’s first lignite ‘opencast’ mine of a total capacity of 2.1 million tonnes in Barsingsar village in Bikaner district. The lignite mine has been set up by “Mini Ratna” Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) Limited.

The lignite mine will produce 250 Megawatts of power, 2190 million units of electricity per year, through two units of thermal power plant, of 125 MW each. While the first unit of the plant will be commissioned in December, the second would start functioning in March next year.
