J-K Police introduces new vehicles for its flying squadsSrinagar, Mar 9 : Police here have provided new vehicles for flying squads as part of a police-public improvement exercise.

"Basically, it has been introduced to improve police-public relations. The initiative is to help people who are in distress and to secure some areas," said Syed Agha-dil-Mujtaba, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) (Srinagar).

The old white colour Gypsy has now been replaced with striking yellow coloured Sumo.

Women turn out in large numbers for police recruitment drive in J-K

Poonch (Jammu and Kashmir), Mar 9 : Casting off their veils and defying social typecasts, women turned out in large numbers for a police recruitment drive here.

The drive was conducted to recruit personnel for the Indian Reserve Police (IRP) battalion.

These young women want to serve the country just like men.

"We want to serve the country. Like a soldier fights for his country and lays down his life we also want to do the same for our country," said Fauzia, a candidate.

Police officials at the recruitment camp expressed happiness at the large turnout and hoped it will help in solving the unemployment problem to some extent in the region.

Territorial Army soldier feared to have joined Lashkar in Doda

Jammu, March 9 : Territorial Army and police sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, fear that one of their personnel has deserted his unit and joined the Lashkar-e-Toiba.

Both claimed that Zafarullah, a soldier with the 169 Territorial Army, which is posted in Doda district, ran away with two rifles on Sunday morning.

Police said they were verifying a report that Zafarullah is the brother of dreaded Laskhar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant Hanief Mohammad, who has presently taken shelter in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

Zafarullah was recruited by the Territorial Army three years ago.

He was attached with the 8 Rashtriya Rifles, which was deployed on Bharat Road at Deshnan near Doda.

National Snow Rugby Championship begins in Kashmir

Gulmarg, Mar 8: India''s first National Snow Rugby Championship was kick-started in Gulmarg, Kashmir, on Saturday.

The Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department and the state''s rugby association are co-hosting the event.

Teams from Delhi, Haryana, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and the host state, along with the team from the armed forces are competing for top honours at the three-day event.

Jammu and Kashmir''s Tourism Director Farooq Shah said the championship would boost the state''s tourism.
